Notes

Short updates, links, and thoughts that do not need to be full blog posts.

I built https://thedeathclock.co at the start of last year and it is on track to get a quarter of a million page views this year. However, it just costs me money. How the heck do I monetise it? Google adwords rejected it because it doesn't have enough content.

I got to fly over Belfast yesterday. It was my first Class D zone transit. Here are a few of the photos. #aviation

Hey @neilhimself. Do you have an recommendations on the best place to buy DRM free ebooks? I don’t love being locked into the Kindle ecosystem.

If not, would you mind boosting for reach? I imagine you have a fairly book savvy audience!

How is it legal for massive companies to be making sweeping layoffs and announcing stock buy backs at the same time?

Do I know anyone from #GitHub who could put me in touch with the right person to help setup up codespace? It’s multi repo with a few moving parts. We’d like to move off Gitpod but have a bad time.

When I grow up I think I’d like to work for Shopify or Cloudflare. They consistently crank out interesting open source work that makes a difference.

Planning on starting a new project this week. Like most web apps it will consist largely of forms. I’m interested in learning more about Remix, but if that wasn’t a factor, what framework should I use?

I flew down over the Mournes today. I’m still amazed that I can just hop in a plane and do this. #aviation

Last week I finished reading Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte. I really enjoyed it so I wrote up my summary of the book. Hopefully you find it useful!

I usually take a lot of notes when reading books. I’m gonna start turning these into blog posts.

The first two will likely be The Mom Test and Building a Second Brain.

Which book if any has had the biggest impact on your life and why?

For me I think it was the 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris. It's not the best book but it definitely changed how I see the world.

This week, I’ve been working on revamping my personal website and adding a new article. Please check it out and let me know what you think. As a side note, I completed this project during Niice’s annual creative week, where we get to work on whatever we want for the first week of the year. It’s such a fun tradition!

I'm excited to see the advances in distributed database technology and services this year. The benefits of running code at the edge are numerous, but if you keep your data in a single location, you miss out on them. In fact, using edge compute with a single data source can even result in a worse experience than using a single server near your database. #databases #tech

I'm streaming working on my site again today.

If you're interested in Next.js the #IndieWeb, or watching me code, come say hi.

Brag about something you did in 2022!

Please boost for reach.

I bought a kindle a few months ago and it has become one of my all time favourite possessions. I’ve gone from reading around 1 or 2 books per year to 2 or 3 each month.

I’ve become reasonably proficient with #rustlang for smaller projects. Next I’d like to get to the same level with #Golang. What books or resources would you recommend?
