I just added a link to my mastodon account to the footer of my website and verified my domain - https://paulmcbride.com
Notes
Short updates, links, and thoughts that do not need to be full blog posts.
This evening, I'll be reading the #ActivityPub spec. Thats the protocol that Mastodon and the #fediverse uses to communicate.
Here is the link if you want to do the same.
I sent off the first part of my US visa application yesterday. We've been talking about it for years, but it feels real now!
My excitement for Mastodon isn't really for Mastodon, its for #ActivityPub and the #OpenWeb.
The web is a tool for human connection that has been hi-jacked by corporations. We've traded our attention for convenience and it feels like the pendulum is starting to swing the other way.
This is great news! The one caveat is that Tumblr will soon be the largest member of the fediverse by a huge margin. They need to be a member, not the owner.
#ActivityPub is vulnerable to the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish manoeuvre that big tech companies are fond off. Let’s hope the play nice but let’s prepare for if they don’t.
It sounds like #Flickr might be joining the #fediverse soon too.
The #OpenWeb is growing!
I'm really enjoying Mastodon so far. I've moved servers to see how it works and to know that I can.
I got so much from Twitter and I'm sad watching it burn, but Mastodon is making that easier.
Viva La Fediverse!
If you're moving over from Twitter and want to follow people you follow there, definitely check out https://mastodon-bridge.vercel.app/
I've just moved to indieweb.social, so it's time for another #introduction.
I'm interested in multiplayer/real-time web development, the indie web and I'm a private pilot.
I work mostly in #TypeScript and #JavaScript but I've dabbled in #Ruby and I'm keen to learn #Rust.
Mastodon has me genuinely excited for the web for the first time in a while.
If any of that interests you, come say hi!
